TULSA, Okla. —
David Evans won twice on Saturday to finish third at the Big 12 Championships as Utah Valley added two more NCAA qualifiers in Evans and
Haiden Drury. Drury finished seventh to clinch his spot with the two joining
Caleb Uhlenhopp, who punched his ticket to Cleveland on Friday night.
Uhlenhopp placed seventh after taking a medical forfeit win following Zack Ryder's (OSU) injury that forced his tournament to end early.
Hudson Rogers also placed for the Wolverines, taking eighth place to give UVU four podium finishes, and finished just shy of an NCAA berth during his redshirt freshman campaign.
"Day two of the Big 12 Championships proved to be an important one for our program as we chased more automatic qualifications," head coach
Adam Hall said. "I'm proud of
David Evans and
Haiden Drury for their resiliency today in winning matches to punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships. David dominated the 8th-ranked guy in the country, 12-5, to finish third. The growth of our program is evident in having twice as many conference place winners and three times as many NCAA qualifiers as we did last year. Our staff looks forward to preparing our athletes for the next two weeks to win in Cleveland. Go Wolverines!"
Evans took care of No. 21 Max Peterson of North Dakota State in the consolation semifinals with takedowns in each of the first two periods on his way to earning a spot in the consolation finals. He defeated Peterson 10-4 before taking out No. 8 Jacob Frost of Iowa State. Against Frost, the No. 2 seed, Evans had three takedowns in the first period to take a 9-2 lead and added a fourth to lead 12-4 after two periods on his way to the victory.
Drury earned the seventh and final spot in the Big 12's 141-pound allocation after his win over No. 22 Pierson Manville of Arizona State. Drury got the match's only takedown in the second period. After starting the second on top in a 0-0 match, Manville got a reversal, but Drury escaped and picked up the takedown to take a 4-2 lead. It was 5-3 in the third after Drury got his escape and he was able to eat a stalling time point and hold on for a 5-4 decision.
Also on Saturday, Cael Valencia of Arizona State defeated Rogers, 7-2, to earn the Big 12's seventh spot at 174 pounds. In the 197-pound ninth place match to determine an alternate at that weight, No. 16 Rune Lawrence of West Virginia defeated
Kael Bennie in an 11-2 major decision.
The NCAA selection show will be Wednesday, March 11 at 8 p.m. EST (6 p.m. MST) with the NCAA Championships March 19-21 in Cleveland, Ohio.
