Utah Valley falls to Air Force in Series Opener

USAFA, Colo. – Utah Valley lost 17-7 on Monday afternoon to the Air Force Academy at Erdle Field. UVU (15-20) was led by a 3-for-3 effort from Mason Hamlin and a 3-for-4 game from Kaden Carpenter, who hit his first career grand slam in the defeat. Tripp Garrish finished 4-for-5 with two home runs and eight RBIs for Air Force (16-18).

Kaden Carpenter wasted no time extending his hitting streak as he lined the third pitch off the right field for a long single. The senior has now recorded a hit in 16 consecutive ball games and reached safely in 17 straight, which ties his season best mark. Carpenter moved into scoring position after stealing second base, before an error moved him to third base. Mason Strong made it 1-0 with an RBI single in the top of the first.

Garrish recorded the first of three extra-base hits in the game with a bases-clearing double during a five-run first inning for the Falcons, who took a 5-1 lead after the first inning. In the second, Colorado native, Mason Hamlin, homered to left field on a line drive shot that cut into the Falcon lead at 5-2.

The Falcons scored in six of the game's seven innings and pulled away with a four-run fourth and three-run fifth inning. Chipper Beck finished 3-for-4 in the game for his fourth multi-hit game in the last six games for the Wolverines. He reached on three singles in the game, spreading the ball all over the field.

UVU looked to rally in the seventh inning, starting with a triple by Derek Houston, before Trenton Rowan walked and Hamlin drove in the first of five runs in the inning on an RBI single. Following a walk to Hunter Katschke, Carpenter unloaded a 457-foot blast to centerfield for his eighth home run of the season. He is now tied for third in the WAC in RBIs with 42 this season.
