LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Utah Valley's
David Evans and
Ed Scott have both secured a top eight finish at the U.S. Senior Open and will compete on Saturday at the Expo at World Market Center in Las Vegas. The duo are two of the four Wolverines representing the Brunson Utah Valley Regional Training Center at the Men's Senior U.S. Open.
Evans (65kg) and Scott (70kg) will both wrestle in the consolation semifinals with Saturday's session beginning at 10 a.m. PDT.
Layne Kleimann (61kg) and
Terrell Barraclough (74kg) recorded three wins each and finished the tournament 3-2, falling just shy of a top eight finish.
Evans opened his day with a 10-0 tech fall (5:02) over Utah native Kyison Garcia of Penn State before he fell to another Utahn and four-time All-American at Nebraska, Brock Hardy, by criteria in a 3-3 decision. Evans responded with wins over Bronson Richins, another Utah prep wrestler, by tech fall and a win by criteria over Ethan Fernandez, who just finished his career at Cornell. He advanced to the consolation semifinals, where he'll face two-time NCAA Champion Vito Arujau.
Scott, who just completed his first season in the corner as an assistant under
Adam Hall, will face prep phenom and Virginia Tech commit Melvin Miller on Saturday after securing three victories. He opened with a 10-1 decision over Brayden Roberts before a fall (1:51) over Alex Castaneda. In the quarterfinals, Scott came up just short against fellow NCAA All-American Tyler Kasak of Penn State in a 7-6 decision. He ended his day against another Penn State wrestler, Connor Pierce, in a 10-0 tech fall (1:01).
Barraclough, a 2025 NCAA All-American for the Wolverines, opened with three consecutive wins to advance to the quarterfinals. He earned a fall (2:07) over Cody Ueberroth, a tech fall (10-0, 3:47) over Hunter Shaut, and a 6-0 decision against Nicco Ruiz, who won the Big 12 Championship for Arizona State at 165 pounds in March.
In the quarterfinals, Barraclough lost a 4-3 decision to Quincy Monday, a three-time All-American at Princeton during his collegiate career. Barraclough looked to take a late 5-4 lead but his initially called 2-point exposure was reversed. He later fell to Joseph Sealey out of Penn State in a 7-3 decision.
Kleimann, who redshirted his true freshman season for Utah Valley, opened with a 12-0 tech fall (1:51) over Joshua Henry. He came up just short in a late comeback against Kyle Burwick, a three-time NCAA qualifier, in a 12-11 decision, before rebounding with a pair of decisive wins. He earned an 11-0 tech fall in 37 seconds over Collin Metzgar and a 10-0 tech fall in 47 second over Tallon Chambers to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. Kleimann dropped his final bout to three-time Arizona State All-American Michael McGee in a 13-2 tech fall (4:32).
A pair of former Wolverines also had strong showings in Senior Greco-Roman at the U.S. Open. On Thursday, Dylan Gregorson dropped his opener before wrestling back to fourth place at 67kg. 2020 NWCA All-American Tate Orndorff went 3-1 on Friday and will wrestle for fifth at 97kg on Saturday.
