Wolverines Mash Past UTA in Friday Doubleheader Sweep

OREM, Utah — Tatum Hall went 6-for-7 with a home run, three doubles, and eight RBIs and Britney Moreno reached base every plate appearance, scoring six times to lead Utah Valley (22-14, 4-4 WAC) to a doubleheader sweep of the UT Arlington Mavericks (15-19, 4-4 WAC) on Friday, winning 9-6 and 13-7.

Hall picked up right where she left off on Tuesday against Weber State, where she had a home run and a five-RBI day. In UVU's three games this week, Hall already has 13 RBIs, the most in any three-game span in program history.

"Tatum's continuing to be super impressive. I'm proud of her, she's been working really hard," said head coach Cody Thomson. "The pitching did a good job today of just keeping that team off the basepaths, that's a very good hitting team. We just have to keep everyone off base that we can."

The Mavericks hit five home runs on the day, all of which were two-run shots, including three in game one that gave UTA all of its scoring.

Moreno extended her reached base streak to 15 games and her hitting streak to seven, going 3-for-3 with a double, three walks, and six runs scored. Moreno has reached base in each of her last 11 plate appearances dating back to Tuesday's game in Ogden.

GAME ONE
The Mavs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead off the bat of Mia McNulty, but the Wolverines were able to answer right back with a run of their own on a groundout by Bailey Marvin.

Hall sparked a five-run rally in the third that gave UVU the lead for good, rapping a bases-loaded double to left center to make it 4-2. Angelique Mann brought Hall home on a sacrifice fly two batters later, then a throwing error allowed Emma Haygood to score on a single by Mya Higareda.

Kelsey Creech kept UTA within striking distance with a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 6-4, but the Wolverines matched it on a two-run single by Marvin in the home half.

Hall picked up another RBI knock in the sixth, driving in Moreno to make it 9-4. The Mavs got another two-run homer from Peyton Holland in the seventh to make it 9-6, but the Wolverines were able to finish it off.

GAME TWO
Utah Valley was able to match every UTA rally in the nightcap run for run, with the difference being a six-run second inning.

UTA struck first once again on a double by McNulty in the first, but Hall got the Wolverines on level terms with a double down the right field line to tie it at one.

Payge Armendariz — who started game two in the circle — helped her own cause with a two-run homer to center that sparked the second inning rally. Amber Rodriguez then sent a two-run double to left center that scored Ry Binne and Moreno, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Hall's lone out of the day was a productive one, grounding out deep into the hole between first and second to score Rodriguez.

Marvin reignited the rally with a double off the wall in center, then her pinch runner Mackenzie Wright came around to score on a single by Megan Sterzer, making it 7-1.

UTA trimmed the deficit down to four at 7-3 with another two-run homer by Creech in the fourth. The Wolverines answered right back in their half of the inning as Marvin singled home Hall and Armendariz doubled home Marvin.

Utah Valley matched the Mavs' three runs in the fifth with an RBI double by Rodriguez and a two-run homer by Hall.

For the fourth time in the game and fifth time on the day, UVU matched UTA's scoring in the sixth as Maddie McSorley made it 13-7 with a sac fly to center.

Utah Valley will look to close out the series sweep tomorrow at noon MT. Prior to first pitch, there will be an Easter egg hunt for kids, scheduled to begin at 11:30. Tomorrow's game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available at GoUVU.com/stats.
