Wolverines Fall in WAC Quarters to CBU, 3-1

5/7/2026 11:21:00 AM

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Britney Moreno tied the career hits record and broke the single-season total bases record as Utah Valley fell 3-1 in its WAC Tournament quarterfinal matchup to the California Baptist Lancers on Thursday morning.

With the loss, the Wolverines drop down into the losers' bracket and will face the UT Arlington Mavericks later this afternoon at 4 p.m. CT/3 p.m. MT.

Moreno roped the first pitch of the game off the third baseman's glove for a double, her 204th career hit and 118th total base, moving into a tie with Basia Query for the most hits in program history and breaking Rachel Hartgrove's 21-year-old record for most total bases in a single season.

Moreno advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, then came in to score on a wild pitch.

The Wolverine lead was short-lived, as CBU rallied for two in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. UVU was one strike away from getting out of the inning unscathed, with Lily Riley getting a check swing on two strikes that was ruled no swing, but the Lancers were able to push two across.

Utah Valley got two runners on in the second, but were unable to capitalize. Tatum Hall led off the fourth with a triple, but was stranded there.

CBU looked to have extended its lead in the third on a single to right, but Megan Sterzer was able to cut down the runner at home after the call was overturned on video review.

The Lancers extended their lead to two in the sixth with another two-out knock. Utah Valley got the tying run in the batter's box in the seventh after Bailey Marvin worked a one-out walk, but the next two Wolverines were retired in order.

Utah Valley will look to keep its season alive another day as the Wolverines face UTA in an elimination game at 4 p.m. MT. The game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats at GoUVU.com/stats.
