NCAA Wrestling Championship brackets released

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA released the brackets for the 2017 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Wednesday and two Utah Valley University grapplers made the cut. Both Tanner Orndorff (197 pounds) and Dustin Dennison (285) will wrestle for UVU at this year's national tournament on March 16-18 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

It will mark the first NCAA appearance for both Wolverine grapplers, as Dennison earned his inaugural bid by placing second in his weight class at the Big 12 Championship last weekend, while Orndorff received his first selection to the "Big Show" via earning an at-large berth on Tuesday.

The 197-pound Orndorff (20-14) will open up his 2017 NCAA Tournament run in a preliminary-round contest against CSU Bakersfield's Matt Williams (17-9), while the 19th-ranked Dennison (22-8) will take on the No. 7 seed from Arizona State Tanner Hall (29-5). The 22nd-ranked Orndorff holds a 15-4 major decision victory on the year over the 29th-ranked Williams, while the two-time NCAA qualifier Hall pulled out a tightly contested 2-1 decision over Dennison last season.

The winner of Orndorff's pigtail-round contest will then advance on to face the No. 4 seed from Virginia Tech Jared Haught (24-2), while the winner of Dennison's first-round matchup against Hall will move on to face either No. 10 Nathan Butler of Stanford (23-9) or Drexel's Joseph Goodhart (24-8).
