GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado - The score was 12-4 in favor of Mesa State when the rains starting coming down at Suplizio Field Saturday. Because the game lasted 4 ½ innings it was counted as an official game giving the Wolverines their second straight loss against the Mavericks.
MSC struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Joe Dirnberger drove in two runs on a double to right centerfield. Dirnberger moved up to third on a ball in the dirt and later scored on a wild pitch.
In the top of the second inning UVSC cut the score to 3-2. Canyon Vance led off the inning with a base hit to left. He moved up to second on a pitch in the dirt. Freshman Dylan Priest doubled to left driving in Vance. Ryan K. Jones moved Priest to third on a groundout. Jeff Broadhead struck out, and Kevin Hashimoto walked. With runners on first and third the Wolverines executed the double steal perfectly for their second run. Hashimoto stole second and on the throw down from the MSC catcher Priest scrambled home.
The Mavericks scored one run in the bottom half of the second inning extending their lead to 4-2. In the top of the third UVSC notched the score at four. With one out Sam Van Dyken singled to right field bring Vance to the plate. Vance promptly hit a high opposite field line drive over the right field wall for a two run homerun.
UVSC starter Aaron Tash battled hard, but didn't get much help from his teammates. He gave up eight runs over the next two innings, but only five of the runs were earned. Tash ended up going three innings suffering 11 runs and only 6 earned runs. The Wolverines committed four errors for the second game in a row.
The rains stomped out any hope of a Wolverine comeback. Weather permitting; the Wolverines and Mavericks will play the final two games of the series on Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader will start at 10:00 am, and the second game will start 30 minutes after the first game ends.
