Mavericks Complete Sweep of Wolverines

February 23, 2004

GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado – The Mesa State Mavericks started where they left off on Friday and Saturday to take both games of a doubleheader with UVSC on Sunday. MSC beat the Wolverines 28-9 in the first game and 10-3 in the nightcap to complete a four-game sweep.

In game one the Wolverines couldn't stop the Mavericks from scoring, and scoring in bunches. MSC scored in every inning but two, and put up five runs in the first, 10 runs in the third and seven runs in the sixth.

UVSC was shut out for the first four innings, but started to put its offense together scoring in very inning from the fifth inning on. Junior Trent Perry led the way for the Wolverines offensively going 4 for 5 with five RBI and two homeruns. Leftfielder Canyon Vance and DH Dan Bulow had three hits apiece. Bulow also drove in two runs in his freshman debut.

Southpaw Brady Drake took the loss. Drake (0-1) lasted just 2 1/3 innings giving up 10 runs.

In the final game of the series starter Jed Jensen kept the explosive MSC offense in check for the first four innings giving up six runs, walking one batter and striking out four. Lefty Ryan M. Jones came in to replace Jensen and gave up four runs, all of which were unearned.

Jones got MSC's Trask Munoz to ground out to shortstop that would have ended the inning, but was called back because UVSC catcher Jeff Broadhead was called for catcher's interference allowing one run to score.  After a pitching change the next hitter, Ryan Griep hit a double to right centerfield that emptied the bases.

The Wolverines scored a single run in three different innings, but couldn't put a sufficient rally together, eventually falling to the Mavericks 10-3. Jensen suffered the loss in his first start of the year.

On the year UVSC falls to 0-4 while MSC improves to 11-3. The Mavericks going into this series were ranked 20th in NCAA Division II.

The Wolverines will be home this weekend and will prepare to travel to Lewiston, Idaho March 4-6 to play in the Banana Belt Tournament hosted by Lewis & Clark State College. The Wolverines will play the University of Portland on the first day, Gonzaga University on the second day, and Washington State and Lewis & Clark in a doubleheader on the third day of the tournament.
