CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Utah Valley State baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning capped by a solo walk off homerun by
Trent Perry to beat Central Michigan 8-7 on Wednesday.
The game was played on the campus of Southern Utah University with UVSC (2-7) as the designated home team.
CMU (2-5) scored first off UVSC starter
Jason Ward in the top of the third inning when Jeremy Crum singled to leftfield and then scored when Jim Geldhof doubled to right centerfield.
The Wolverines came right back in the bottom of the third inning to score three runs. With one out
Dylan Priest walked.
Jeff Broadhead came up and hit a double over the left fielder's head to score Priest. With Broadhead on second lead off hitter
Kevin Hashimoto came to the plate and hit a line drive two run homerun over the leftfield fence. It was the junior centerfielder's first career homerun to give UVSC a 3-1 lead.
The Chippewas scored one run in the sixth to cut the UVSC lead to 3-2, and scored five runs over the next two innings to take a 7-3 lead in the 8th inning. UVSC's offense couldn't put anything together from the third inning on, and went into the bottom of the ninth down by four runs.
Sam Van Dyken grounded out to lead off the ninth inning.
Reno Mendenhall then came to the plate and singled to left field. Priest then drew his second walk of the day to put runners on first and second. Broadhead worked the count to full and eventually walked to load the bases. With Hashimoto at the plate, CMU's Joel Pelland tried to pick off Priest at second base and threw the ball into centerfield allowing Mendenhall to score from the third. On the play Chippewa shortstop Chase Welker was called for obstruction as he fell over Priest who was trying to advance to third base.
The obstruction call moved Priest to third to give UVSC runners on first and third with one out. Hashimoto then drove a double to deep left centerfield to score Priest and move Broadhead to third base. The CMU lead was cut to 7-5, when Pepe Jones came to the plate. Jones battled hard and with two strikes lined a single to rightfield to drive in both runners and tie the game 7-7. The throw from the outfield sailed high and Jones tried to advance to second, but was thrown out for the second out of the inning.
Perry stepped to the plate with a situation that all baseball players dream of; a walk of homerun in the bottom of the ninth. Perry's dream came true as he belted an inside fastball over the left field fence and was met by his Wolverine teammates at home plate.
Aaron Tash (1-2), who came into pitch the top of the ninth inning earned the victory for UVSC.
The Wolverines will travel to Oregon State University for a three game series on March 19-21. The series will open a ten day road trip to the Northwest. UVSC will play OSU, University of Portland and Northwest Nazarene University during the trip.
