CORVALLIS, Oregon - The Wolverines roughed up first-team all Pac-10 pitcher, Jake Postlewait, for four runs in the top of the first inning, but Oregon State battled back to overcome the UVSC lead and win 11-5 on Friday.
UVSC pounded out 12 hits, but failed to knock in runs in three different innings with runners in scoring position.
Dan Bulow and
Canyon Vance each had three hits and
Reno Mendenhall had two and drove in three runs.
In the first inning
Trent Perry got UVSC on the board with a solo homerun to left field with two outs. It was Perry's second consecutive game with a homerun. The Wolverines then proceeded to load the bases, with three consecutive singles by Bulow, Vance, and
Sam Van Dyken. Mendenhall then cleared the bases with a line drive double into the left field corner to give UVSC the early 4-0 advantage.
Oregon State bounced back with six runs in the bottom half off capped by Beaver centerfielder Aaron Mathews' two-run double. Mathews went 4 for 4 with 4 RBI on the day.
The Wolverines looked like they would get out of the inning tied at 4-4, but an errant throw by shortstop
Dylan Priest allowed two unearned runs to score.
Ward was touched up for four more runs through the next 2 2/3 innings, while Postlewait settled down working his way out of a couple jams. Postlewait earned the win and improved to 5-0 on the year and Ward fell to 1-2.
UVSC relievers,
Adam Sorenson and
Derek Larsen came in to pitch nicely in the final 4 1/3 innings giving up just one run on two hits.
The Wolverine's final run came off a solo homerun by Bulow; his first of the year.
