Beavers Take Game Two of Series

March 20, 2004

CORVALLIS, Oregon - The Utah Valley State baseball team had several chances to score, but left 10 runners stranded on base in a 7-0 loss to Oregon State in game two of the series on Saturday.

UVSC starter Aaron Tash went six strong innings and gave up just two earned runs, but the Wolverine offense couldn't come up with a timely hit to dig into the early 2-0 Beaver lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Tash, who battled out of several tough situations, looked as if he would get out of a bases loaded jam when Jacoby Ellsbury hit a chopper to the right side. Wolverine second baseman, Pepe Jones was unable to handle the ball cleanly allowing one run to score. The error gave OSU one extra at bat in the inning and Mike Lissman made the most of it, hitting a two-run single to right field.

UVSC had runners on first and second in both the first and third innings and bases loaded in the fourth innings, but failed score. In the fifth inning the Wolverines executed a perfect hit-and-run with Kevin Hashimoto on first and Jones at the plate. Jones lined a ball to right field moving Hashimoto to third with no outs. With the Beavers on the ropes again Trent Perry hit a hard line drive to the shortstop and Josh Hinckley grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to stomp out the rally.

Hashimoto had a nice day at the plate going 3-for-5, and Jones added two hits. The Wolverines out hit the Beavers nine to eight in the game.

With the loss UVSC falls to 2-9 on the season, while OSU improves to 14-3. Tash (1-3) took the loss and Andy Baldwin (4-2) earned the win for the Beavers. Baldwin went six innings, giving up all nine of UVSC's hits, and striking out four.

The final game of the series will be Sunday at 2:00 pm (MST). Live stats of the series finale are available by going to www.osubeavers.com.
