Wolverines Come Back to Beat Oregon State

March 21, 2004

CORVALLIS, Oregon - After scoring five runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat Central Michigan three games ago, the Wolverines pulled off another come-from-behind victory Sunday against Pac-10 foe, Oregon State.

UVSC went into the top of the ninth inning down 4-3. A two-run rally gave the Wolverines a 5-4 lead and reliever Adam Sorenson retired the middle of the OSU lineup to seal the victory.

"This is a tremendous victory for our baseball program," said head coach Steve Gardner. "It was a great team effort, and that is what has to happen. I was very proud of our club."

On March 1st, OSU was ranked 20th in the NCAA Division I Collegiate Baseball poll, and coming into the series they were ranked 37th in the ESPN/Sports Weekly Coaches poll. The Beavers have key wins over Washington (a previously ranked team), Southwest Missouri State (2003 College World Series team) and UVSC in-state rival, Utah.

Just as they did in game one, the Wolverines struck first by scoring in the first inning. Lead off hitter Kevin Hashimoto singled to start the game, and Pepe Jones bunted him over to second. After a fly out by Trent Perry, Dan Bulow doubled down the left field line to score Hashimoto. Canyon Vance hit a RBI single to score Bulow and give UVSC an early 2-0 lead.

The Beavers answered back with two runs in the bottom half when Tony Calderon hit a two RBI single. Wolverine starter Brady Drake settled down and controlled the damage holding the score at 2-2.

UVSC took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth off a RBI single by Jeremy Harris. OSU then tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom home half of the fourth, and in the sixth inning the Beavers took a 4-3 lead when Shea McFeely hit a solo homerun to left field.

That was the score when the Wolverines came up in the ninth. Sam Van Dyken led off the inning with a single up the middle. Harris bunted Van Dyken over. Jeff Broadhead hit soft one hop line drive that Calderon tried to make a running play on but couldn't handle. The error allowed Van Dyken to move to third. Hashimoto came up with runners on first and third got behind 0-2, but worked the count and walked to load the bases. Jones, who hit a 2 RBI single to tie the Central Michigan game, clutched up again with a single through the right side to tie the game at 4-4. Perry, whose walk-off homerun won the Central Michigan game, hit a long sacrifice fly to center field to score Broadhead from third and help UVSC regain the lead at 5-4.

Sorenson (1-0) retired the side in the bottom of the ninth to earn the victory. In 3 1/3 innings of relief of Drake, Sorenson gave up just one hit and struck out three. Drake in his 5 2/3 innings gave up four runs (3 of them earned) striking out two and walking one.

The Wolverines will stay on the road and travel to Portland for a two-game series with University of Portland on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Monday UVSC will not play, but will practice at UP to prepare for the series. The Wolverines defeated the Pilots 5-4 on March 4th in the Banana Belt Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho. Both games of the series will start at 3:00 pm (MST).
