PORTLAND, Oregon - Jason Ward pitched eight innings and the Wolverines scored eleven runs on twelve hits to win 11-8, and complete a two-game sweep of University of Portland on Wednesday at Pilot Stadium.
A couple of bad breaks aloud the Pilots to score more runs than they should have. In the fourth inning UP had the bases loaded with two outs and Ward got Jesse Rodgers to hit a fly ball down the left field line. Wolverine left fielder
Kevin Hashimoto looked like he had a beat on the ball, but slipped on the wet grass, which prevented him from making the catch. The runners were running on contact and all three runs scored on the play.
In his eight innings, Ward scattered eight hits, and allowed six runs (five earned), while striking out four. He improves to 2-2 on the year. Pilot starter Kyle Corra falls to 0-2, as he went 7 1/3, giving up eight hits and seven runs. The UP defense struggled, committing four errors on the day. UVSC committed three errors.
With the four run inning in the bottom of the fourth, UP took a 4-3 lead. The Wolverines came right back to tie the game 4-4 in the top half of the fifth. Pepe Jones doubled off the left field wall and moved to third on a wild pitch.
Trent Perry drove him in with a sacrifice fly.
The Pilots regained a one run lead in the bottom of the seventh. But the Wolverines weren't going to be denied the victory as they scored seven runs over the last two innings to secure the win and run their winning streak to three games.
UVSC will travel to Nampa, Idaho and finish up the road trip with a four game series with Northwest Nazarene University. On Friday the Wolverines and Crusaders will play a doubleheader with the first game starting at 4:00 pm (MST). The final two games of the series will be played on Saturday with the first game starting at 12:00 pm (MST).
