NAMPA, Idaho - Aaron Tash and
Brady Drake gave UVSC two solid starts in a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Nazarene University on Friday.
Adam Sorenson came in to record saves in both games.
Sorenson relieved Tash in the twelfth inning after Tash went 11 strong innings scattering five hits and only giving up one run. Game two was a seven inning contest and Sorenson shut the door in the bottom of the ninth after Drake went six innings giving up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits, while striking out five Crusader hitters.
In game one the Crusaders scored one run in the sixth, and the Wolverines didn't score until the top of the eighth inning win
Jeremy Harris led off with a triple down the right field line.
Kevin Hashimoto walked, and Pepe Jones laid down a perfect push bunt to score Harris from third tying the game at 1-1.
The game stayed tied until the top of the twelfth inning when the Wolverines struck again scoring two runs off RBI singles by Hashimoto and
Trent Perry. NNU scored one run in the home half of the twelfth, but that is as close as the Crusaders would get.
In game two the Wolverines took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Crusaders came back in the bottom of the third inning to score two runs. UVSC rebutted with two runs of its own in the top of the fourth.
NNU then took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Wolverines came back and put the game out of reach with one run in the fifth and a five run sixth inning capped by a three run homerun by
Canyon Vance to take a 9-5 lead. The Crusaders scrapped back to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 9-7. Sorenson came in and retired the side in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the victory and his second save of the day.
With the doubleheader sweep UVSC improves to 7-9 on the year, and extend its winning streak to five games. Tash improves to 2-3, and Drake improves to 1-2. Sorenson's two saves on the day tie him with
Todd Bateman as the Wolverine saves leader.
