PROVO, Utah - A four run seventh inning gave University of Northern Colorado the advantage in a 6-3 win over Utah Valley State on Friday at Brigham Young University.
The Bears scored one run in the first inning on a RBI single by Brad Baker. Wolverine starter,
Jed Jensen minimized the damage by getting John Ray to pop out the first base with the bases loaded.
The Wolverines tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on a solo homerun by
Josh Hinckley, his second of the year. Hinckley went 2-for-3 on the day with 2 RBI.
UVSC added two more runs in the fourth inning when Pepe Jones led off the inning with a single and
Trent Perry walked. Hinckley came up and doubled down the right field line to score Jones and move Perry to third.
Canyon Vance scored Perry on a groundout to give the Wolverines a 3-1 advantage.
UNC got one run back in the top half of the fifth when Jon Dyson singled in Chad Clark, who led off the inning with a double.
In the seventh inning Jensen struck out Ray for the first out of the inning. UNC's Ryan Symons then hit a homerun to left field. Clark came up and hit a soft ground ball to UVSC third baseman
Reno Mendenhall who dived to his left and made a good stop. But Mendenhall's throw pulled Perry off the bag. It was ruled a hit, and proved to be an important play because following that play which would have been the second out, the Bears had three straight hits and scored three more runs.
The Wolverines had a chance to make some noise in the bottom half of the seventh inning when they got runners on first and second on back to back singles by
Jeremy Harris and
Adam Hutchinson. With one out the rally was stomped out when
Kevin Hashimoto grounding into a double play.
