Wolverines Come From Behind to Beat Utes

PROVO, Utah - Jason Ward pitched, Josh Hinckley hit, and Utah Valley State rallied for a 4-2 win over the University of Utah on Tuesday in Provo.

Ward (3-2) shrugged off a first-inning 2-run homer by Utah's Matt Ciaramella and shut the Utes out the rest of the way to earn the complete-game win. Ward scattered 7 hits while keeping Utah at bay until his teammates finally solved Ute starter Ben Buck (1-2) in the bottom of the eighth inning where Hinckley doubled UVSC to the lead.

The Wolverine's eighth started innocently with Pepe Jones and Jeff Broadhead both grounding out. But then the Wolverines strung together five straight hits. Jeremy Harris started the rally with a groundball single back up the middle. Reno Mendenhall and Canyon Vance followed with singles of their own. Vance's single was of the infield variety and plated Harris cutting Utah's lead to 2-1 and set up Hinckley's heroics.

The Wolverines added an insurance run when Trent Perry singled through the left side to drive in pinch runner Dylan Priest

With the win, UVSC improves to 14-13 and gets over the .500 mark for the first time this season. The Wolverines extended their win streak to six games in a row, their longest winning streak of the year.

UVSC will travel on Saturday to play Weber State University in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm.
