Wolverines Sweep Wildcats, Win Eighth Straight

April 24, 2004

KAYSVILLE, Utah - The Utah Valley State baseball team swept Weber State University on Saturday, pounding the Wildcats 16-5, and 9-4 at Davis High School baseball field. With the wins, the Wolverines extend their current winning streak to eight games.

UVSC got on the board first with four straight singles to lead off the game, including a two-run single by Canyon Vance. Three batters later, Dan Bulow hit a two-run homerun to give the Wolverines an early 5-0 lead.

The Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom half of the first, and two more in the second to cut the UVSC lead to 5-4. The Wolverines struck again in the third inning with six more runs to give them some breathing room.

The Wildcats scored one more time, but UVSC starter Brady Drake shut WSU out the rest of the way. In the fifth inning UVSC rounded out its scoring putting up five runs. Pepe Jones led off with a solo homerun. After a hit-by-pitch, Todd Bateman doubled in Adam Hutchinson. Dan Bulow and Jed Jensen then hit back-to-back homeruns to put the game away for good. It was Bulow's second homerun of the game. He went 4-for-4 with a 2B, and two bombs.

Brady Drake earned the win going five innings for UVSC.

In game two, both teams were held scoreless throughout the first two innings. UVSC squeaked by a run in the third, scoring on a Wildcat pass ball.

Jensen held the Wildcats scoreless in the third, and UVSC gave him some insurance in the fourth with six runs, capped by a Hutchinson grand slam. Bateman, Jeff Broadhead, and Jones all singled to load the bases for Hutchinson, who deposited a first pitch fast ball over the left centerfield wall.

The Wolverines added another run in the sixth on a Reno Mendenhall solo blast. Both Mendenhall and Jones hit their first homeruns of the year on the day.

UVSC improves to 16-13 on the year and is currently riding its longest winning streak of the year. Jensen earned the victory on the mound in game two, pitching eight strong innings, and scattering six hits.

The Wolverines travel to Salt Lake City on Tuesday to take on the University of Utah. UVSC beat the Utes 4-2, last Tuesday in Provo.
