PROVO, Utah - Trevor Eastman's two homeruns helped the University of Utah to a 7-4 win over Utah Valley State Tuesday night at Larry H. Miller Field. Eastman's solo shot in the top of the seventh inning tied the game at 4-4, and his three run round tripper in the eighth gave the Utes the lead for good.
Utah got on the board first in the third inning, scoring three runs with two outs. After getting the first two hitters to ground out, Wolverine starter
Aaron Tash walked Jay Brossman to extend the inning for Matt Ciaramella, who hit a two-run homerun to right field. The Utes added an extra run in the inning on a single and a UVSC error.
The Wolverines, who have been plagued by miscues all year long, were hurt again by four more errors on the night. Only four of the seven Ute runs were earned.
UVSC got one run back in the bottom of the third on a RBI groundout by
Jeff Broadhead. He drove in
Jed Jensen, who led the inning off with a double to right center.
UVSC took the lead 4-3 in the fourth inning when
Reno Mendenhall walked to lead off the inning, bringing a hot hitting
Canyon Vance to the plate. Vance, who lined out hard to left field in his first at bat, got a pitch that he could line to left center, but this time it was driven over the wall for a two run homerun. The Wolverines scored their final run of the inning on a RBI single by Jensen.
Eastman did the rest of the damage on the Wolverines with his second and third homeruns of the year.
Tash, the Wolverines sole senior, took the loss and falls to 5-6 on the year. He pitched well, scattering seven hits in 7 2/3 innings giving up just the three unearned runs.
Jason Ward came in the game to face Eastman with runners on first and third and the game still tied 4-4. Ward delivered a first pitch slider that stayed up and Eastman pulled it over the left field fence.
The Wolverines got runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn't push any runs across.
Jason Price earned the win for the Utes. He came in the game after starter Ryan Florence gave up four earned runs in four innings of work. Price (4-7) didn't allow a run and only suffered one hit in three innings pitched.
The Wolverines (18-17) will try to finish their inaugural Division I year above .500 with a win over the Utes tomorrow in Salt Lake City. The two teams will meet at 2:00 pm on Wednesday at Ute Field.
