USAF ACADEMY, Colorado - Trent Perry and Jed Jensen were quite the duo Friday afternoon as the two had career days leading the Utah Valley State baseball team to two wins in Colorado.
Perry did his damage at the plate, powering three home runs and 9 RBI in two games. In the opener Perry went 2-3 with a home run and 4 RBI as Utah Valley State beat North Dakota State 10-0. Perry capped off the day by going 3-4 with 2 bombs and five RBI in a 13-5 win over Air Force.
"He took good swings in good counts. He was very selective, very patient,"Â said Assistant Coach Nate Mathis. "And when he got into a good hitter's count he just took a good short swing and the ball flew."
As for Jensen's day, rather than being the Robin to Perry's Batman, he was much like the Caped Crusader himself as he was nearly perfect throwing a three hit shutout, while striking out 10 and walking only one.
"He responded to the challenge that coach Gardner gave to him,"Â said Assistant Coach Eric Madsen. "All the pitchers did, but Jed did especially--to have no walks and get ahead of the hitters."
The day wasn't without its cast of other heroes either. Brad Hales extended his season long hitting streak to five after picking up two hits in each game, while Canyon Vance finished the day 5-5 with 5 RBI of his own.
The Wolverines pounded out 19 hits against Air Force, scoring in six of the nine innings including a five-run fifth.
"Even last week this team knew that we're gonna be a good team--we're gonna score runs,"Â said Mathis. "What this does for our confidence can't really be measured."
Air Force scored all five of its runs on two home runs each by Karl Bolt and Nathan DeRohan. Brady Drake picked up the win against the Falcons with Beau Giles getting the four-inning save.
Tomorrow the Wolverines and Falcons will go at it again beginning at 1:00Â p.m. Sunday, Utah Valley will play North Dakota State at 10:00Â a.m. to finish off the weekend.
