Wolverines Earn Split and End Losing Streak in Big Way

PULLMAN, Washington - The Utah Valley State baseball team broke out of its slump in a big way on Saturday by beating Washington State 14-4 in the second game of a double header in Pullman, Washington. The Wolverines pounded out 19 hits as a team, including four from Canyon Vance and three apiece from Nick Connor, Dan Bulow and Scott Croshaw. South paw Brady Drake went the distance on the hill, earning his 2nd victory of the season.

"I felt good. We haven't had too many chances to win too many ballgames as of late," said Drake. "And any time you can beat a PAC-10 team, with it being the top baseball league in the whole country...you can beat anyone."

Vance got the team started with a two-run homer in the first inning while Bulow went yard twice including an unbelievable tape measure shot that left the entire stadium speechless.

"That felt good," said Bulow. "I've been waiting for a while to prove myself. I felt like my old self."

The Wolverines scored runs in every inning but the sixth and ninth and jumped out to an 11-2 lead after just five innings of play.

"I felt it was coming. I thought it would come a little earlier," said Vance. "But I think we have the potential to do this every single game."

Connor led the Wolverines with 4 RBI. The win ends a nine game losing streak for Utah Valley State as they move to 6-15 on the season.

The Wolverines lost the first game of the twin bill 9-3. Utah Valley picked up 11 hits in the game, but the Cougars had 14 of their own, including home runs from Jim Murphy and Kaeo Rubin and cruised to the victory. Murphy has homered in every game this year against the Wolverines, including the game on March 3rd in Lewiston, Idaho.

Reno Mendenhall homered for Utah Valley in the first game, while Kory Drew, Vance, Brad Hales and Jeremy Harris each had two hits. Todd Bateman made his season debut on the mound for the Wolverines, throwing two perfect innings in relief and striking out three.

Utah Valley State will try earn a split of the four game series and attempt to take the season series from Washington State on Sunday at 1:00pm MST. The game can be heard live at wolverinesports.net.
