Big Inning Does Wolverines in Again

PROVO, Utah - As has been the theme a few times this season, the Utah Valley State baseball team gave up one big inning that more than made the difference in a win or a loss. On Tuesday night against BYU, it was an eight run sixth inning by the Cougars that put the Wolverines in a hole that they couldn't climb out of. Utah Valley put up a valiant effort as they cut an eight run deficit to three, but still fell short 13-10.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0 lead after two innings and then took a 2-0 lead when Canyon Vance hit his third home run of the season over the left field wall. Vance is 10 for his last 18 at bats dating back to the last series at Washington State.

The score was deadlocked at five when the Cougars had the eight run outburst. Ryan Chambers led off the inning with a home run, followed by a Bryce Ayoso single and then a Sean McNaughton homer. BYU added two more home runs in the inning and picked up eight runs in the 6th inning to take a 13-5 lead.

The Wolverines came back with three in the seventh and two in the eighth, but went down in order in the ninth and have now lost two in a row after Saturday's 14-4 win over Washington State. Utah Valley drops to 6-17 on the season.

Nick Connor had three more hits, including two doubles for Utah Valley and is now batting .325 on the season. Trent Perry continues to stay hot at the plate as well, going 2-3 and scoring twice while Todd Bateman was 2-4 at the plate and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Up next for the Wolverines is the first home series ever at the new Parkway Crossing Stadium. The series and stadium open Thursday at 6:00pm, followed by another 6:00pm start on Friday and a 1:00pm double header on Saturday. Friday is the grand opening of the new stadium, highlighted by fireworks following the game. All four games during the weekend can be heard live by going to wolverinesports.net/broadcast.
