Gardner Gets 400th Win as Wolverines Win Home Opener

OREM, Utah - It was a monumental night Thursday in Orem as the Utah Valley State baseball team opened brand new Parkway Crossing Stadium with a win over Southern Utah 5-3. The win was also head coach Steve Gardner's 400th win at Utah Valley State as he opened his 15th home season in Orem. Sophomore Dan Bulow hit the first home run ever at Parkway Crossing Stadium, a 440 foot blast to the deepest part of the park.

"It was a great win for us," said Gardner. ";Bulow hit that ball about half a mile. I didn't think I'd ever see a ball go out that part of the park. That ball was crushed."

Kam Mickolio and Brady Drake combined to strike out 14 SUU batters. Mickolio picked up the win after going five innings, while Drake got the save after throwing four complete innings and striking out seven.

"Kam did a good job. He's starting to come around right now...and Brady came in a did a pretty good job," said Gardner.

SUU scored a run in the top of the 1st to take an early lead, but the Wolverines answered when Canyon Vance singled to score Kory Drew tie the game.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Todd Bateman doubled to lead off the inning and was driven in on a single by Bulow, who finished the day 3-4 with the home run and three RBI. Bulow is now tied for the team lead in home runs with Trent Perry and Kory Drew with five.

Bulow's long ball stretched the Wolverine lead to 5-1, but that was cut in half when former Utah Valley State player Justin Sotelo hit a two-run homer in the 8th inning.

After giving up a lead off single to begin the 9th, Drake finished strong striking out the next two batters before getting J.D. Westphal to fly out to Nick Connor in right.

Canyon Vance and Kory Drew both extended their five game hitting streaks, with Vance finishing 3-4 to raise his team leading batting average to .425. Drew, Trent Perry and Eli Slesk each picked up two hits as Utah Valley pounded out 15 hits on the evening.

Mickolio improved to 2-3 on the year, while Drake picked up his first save of the season. Both teams are back at it again tomorrow night at 6:00pm at Parkway Crossing Stadium.
