OREM, Utah - The rain and snow finally stopped Friday afternoon, but the Utah Valley State baseball team provided the thunder as they exploded for 25 runs Friday in a 25-6 win over Southern Utah. The win was their 2nd consecutive win as they improve to 2-0 in the new ballpark and 8-17 on the season. The 25 runs are a NCAA school record for the Wolverines, while the team tallied 23 hits, two short of the school record.
The game looked like it was going to be a pitcher's duel when in the fourth inning the T-Birds led Utah Valley State 3-2. But the Wolverines scored seven unearned runs in the bottom of the 5th to jump out to a 9-3 lead. Six of the seven runs scored by Utah Valley came with two outs as the Wolverines had 13 two out RBI on the day.
SUU cut into the lead with two runs in the top of the 7th inning, but that was answered by five more from Utah Valley in the bottom of the 7th followed by an 11 spot in the 8th.
The two teams combined for 12 errors on the evening, with SUU committing seven costly ones as 19 of the 25 runs put up by the Wolverines were unearned.
Cory Newton, who came into the game just 5-for-51 on the season, was 5-5 doubling his hit total for the season and breaking out of a big slump.
"Newton's had a tough time,"Â said Wolverine coach Steve Gardner. "But he is a good kid and he works hard. I was proud of how he played."
"It feels great. (The slump's) affected my entire life,"Â said Newton. "I've been really frustrated this whole season, but hopefully I can keep rolling."
Trent Perry continued to smack the ball all over the field as he was 4-for-6 with a three run home run, two doubles and six RBI. His home run came in the 7th inning, which was his sixth of the season that temporarily game him the team lead until Kory Drew smacked a grand slam in the 8th for his sixth round-tripper. Drew also drove in six runs and was 4-for-7 on the night. Brad Hales and Eli Slesk both had three hits and two RBI for the Wolverines as well.
Not to be forgotten was Jed Jensen's performance on the hill, as the threw a complete game, giving up six runs, four earned, on nine hits while striking out eight.
