SEATTLE, Washington - Utah Valley State got a great pitching performance from junior Kam Mickolio on Monday but couldn't put enough runs on the board as they lost a tight pitcher's duel 3-1 in the first game of a double header against Washington.
Mickolio threw seven innings, giving up just three runs (only one earned), while striking out seven. An early defensive error by Utah Valley proved costly as Kyle Larsen hit a two run home run for the Huskies in the first inning that made up the difference in the game.
David Dowling and Josh Conover combined to allow just one unearned run and four hits. Brad Hales had two of Utah Valley's four hits, including one in the ninth as the Wolverines put up a minor threat before coming up short.
In the second game of the double header, a seven run 5th inning for Washington did in the Wolverines as they lost 11-1 to drop their third game in a row. The score was tied at one when the Huskies pushed across the seven runs, five of which were unearned.
Washington got another excellent start from its pitching staff as Brandon McKerney threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit.
The Wolverines could again only come up with four hits off of the Husky staff, with Dan Bulow going 2-3 to lead the team.
The two teams will play the final game of a three-game series today at 2:00pm MST in Seattle. The game can be heard live on wolverinesport.net.
