10 Run Inning Propels Wolverines Past Utes

OREM, Utah - For a team that relies on momentum and big innings to put wins on the board it was the right night for baseball for Utah Valley State as they pushed 18 runs across the plate in an 18-6 win over in-state rival Utah. The Wolverines used two big innings, the fourth when they scored four runs and the eighth when they plated 10 runs, to cruise to their 11th victory.

Nick Connor and Dan Bulow both had five hit games for Utah Valley State, with both players picking up two of those hits in the long eighth inning. Bulow hit an incredible blast for his Division-I Independent leading 11th home run of the season in the fourth inning and finished with four runs batted in. Connor-??s day included three runs scored and three stolen bases.

"This team is such a momentum team," said Utah Valley State assistant Nate Mathis. "When they get rolling, it just doesn't stop."

Surprisingly the play of the game came on the defensive side of the ball for the Wolverines in what was probably the play of the year. With one on and one out in the 4th inning, Kory Drew tracked down a line shot off of the bat of Ryder Olsen and fearlessly crashed hard into the wall while making the catch before getting the ball back in to double up Adam Frank at first base.

The Wolverines used the momentum from the play by Drew into the four run 4th that included Bulow's home run and a long ball by Kory Drew. The four runs in the 4th answered a grand slam by Jay Brossman in the third inning that gave Utah the lead and the momentum.

The lead was only two after Ryan Khoury hit a solo shot in the top of the 8th inning. But a single by Connor to lead off the bottom of the eighth followed by a stolen base and a walk to Eli Slesk set the table for a three run bomb by Trent Perry for his 10th home run and team leading 43rd RBI.

From there, Utah Valley State sent 12 more batters to the plate and Utah coach Bill Kinneberg used four pitchers in the inning before the inning that wouldn't end finally did.

Jed Jensen picked up his third win of the season as he went 7 1/3 allowing seven hits and two earned runs.

Tomorrow the Wolverines will face a tough task as they take on #2 ranked (NAIA) Lewis & Clark State at 2:00pm. The Warriors are coming off of a 5-2 loss to BYU on Tuesday and sit at 28-6 on the season. Lewis & Clark beat Utah Valley State 18-3 in the Banana Belt Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho in March.
