OREM, Utah - A day after picking up their second straight win with things seemingly moving in the right direction, the Utah Valley State baseball team struggled defensively and when it counted at the plate as they were battered by #2 (NAIA) Lewis & Clark State 13-3 on Wednesday afternoon. Six Wolverine errors proved costly as the Warriors put four runs on the board in the 4th inning and six on the board in the 5th to erase a 2-1 deficit and turn it into a nine run lead.
The day actually began well for the Wolverines as they picked up two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning after Canyon Vance homered and Brad Hales walked with the bases loaded. But that lead was short lived as Lewis & Clark pounded out 17 hits on the afternoon. The bottom of the order did the job for the Warriors as the 6-9 hitters finished 8-for-17 with five runs batted in and 10 runs scored on the day.
Gavin Concepcion and Brandon Ramsey both went 3-for-5 in the seven and eight spots in the order and leadoff man Jose Castenon also was 3-for-5 on the day for Lewis & Clark.
Canyon Vance and Eli Slesk had three hits apiece for the Wolverines, including Vance's home run (his fourth of the season.) A day after picking up five hits against the University of Utah, Nick Connor and Dan Bulow were both hitless in five at-bats as Utah Valley struggled to get the big hits as they stranded 14 runners on the day.
The Wolverines were just 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position and just 3-for-25 with runners on base. Contrast that to Lewis & Clark, who was 10-for-19 with runners in scoring position, and it's easy to see the reasons for the 10-run loss.
Utah Valley State will be off on Thursday as they travel to Sacramento for an upcoming four game series with Sacramento State beginning of Friday. All four games in the series can be heard live on wolverinesports.net.
