SACRAMENTO, California - It was a beautiful day for baseball on Friday in Northern California, but the result wasn't so pretty as Utah Valley State struggled to find the big hit in a 4-1 loss to Sacramento State. The Wolverines were just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, and grounded into three double plays (two of which came with runners on third.)
Ethan Katz pitched a complete game for Sac State and was working on a shut-out until Dan Bulow hit his 12th homer of 2005, a towering shot over the right-centerfield wall in the 9th inning.
"Give him (Katz) a lot of credit,"Â said Gardner. "He kept us off balance, but we didn't take care of the opportunities we had and we have got to have guys step up. We had a poor approach at the plate."
Kam Mickolio started the game for Utah Valley State, but was forced to exit early after he took a line shot off the bat of Brett Flowers in the 1st inning. The score was 2-0 when Mickolio left the game and Todd Bateman took over. Bateman came into the game having just thrown 7 2/3 innings and doubled that total in just one appearance. For the afternoon, Bateman went 7 2/3, giving up two runs on eight hits.
"Bateman had a super game. He's had some good outings,"Â said Gardner. "I thought it was a good chance to get him some extra innings and he came through."
Bulow and Nick Connor led the Wolverines with two hits apiece, with both picking up doubles in the game.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at Noon MST. Both games can be heard live on wolverinesports.net.
