SACRAMENTO, California - It was a disappointing afternoon on Saturday as the Utah Valley State baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Sacramento State, 14-5 and 7-6.
The Wolverines opened up the day allowing five runs in the first and six runs in the second inning of the first game to dig themselves an 11 run hole. Errors plagued the Wolverines as they committed four in the two innings. The Hornets cruised 14-5 in the first game as the two teams combined to hit four home runs, including one each by Canyon Vance and Trent Perry. Perry finished the game 4-4 as the top four hitters in the Wolverine order produced all nine hits on the day.
Brett Guerrero pitched well in relief for Utah Valley State, lasting 5 2/3 and only allowing one earned run.
In the 2nd game of the twinbill, the Wolverines picked up two runs in the top of the first inning for their first lead of the series, but gave two right back to Sac State in the bottom of the first. Again, errors hurt Utah Valley as both runs were unearned.
The Wolverines took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth when the Hornets scored twice to tie it, the scored once in the sixth to take a one run lead and twice in the seventh to go up 7-4.
Utah Valley State made a run in the eighth as Eli Slesk singled and was brought home by a Dan Bulow double. Bulow was scored on a Cory Newton single to cut the lead to 7-6, but that was as close as the Wolverines would come as they went down in order in the ninth and Sac State closer Marshall Plouffe earned his fourth save of the season.
Nick Connor had four hits in the second game for the Wolverines while Canyon Vance was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Beau Giles worked two innings of relief during the day, allowing just one walk.
Utah Valley State will try to salvage a game tomorrow as the series concludes at 2:00pm MST. The game can be heard live on wolverinesports.net.
