Tash Goes the Distance in First Ever Win Over BYU

OREM, Utah - Just nine hours after what turned out to be a 19 hour bus ride from Sacramento, Kyle Tash threw a complete game in leading Utah Valley State to its first ever win over BYU 7-4 on a rainy night at Parkway Crossing Stadium.

After completing a four-game series on Sunday, the Wolverines were midway through their bus trip back to Orem when the bus broke down, causing a seven hour delay with all 21 players, three coaches and the sports information director stuck in a cold bus 30 miles outside of Elko, Nevada.

"We had a great time last night even though we were stranded," said Nick Connor. "It was a great bonding experience for the team. To come back fatigued and to step on the field and get the job done is huge for us."

Tash cruised through the first seven innings, allowing just one Cougar run before the Mountain West Conference's 1st place team made it interesting in the ninth inning.

After Ryan Chambers doubled to lead off the ninth, Tash retired Casey Nelson and Bryce Ayoso before three straight singles cut the lead to four. With the score at 7-3, former Wolverine Apana Nakayama stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded as the tying run.

Nakayama wasted no time singling up the middle, scoring Kevin Sloan but the runner on first, Marcos Villezcas failed to notice BYU coach Vance Law holding Adrian Molina at third. As Villezcas rounded second, Molina was forced to leave the bag at third and was eventually tagged out by Utah Valley State catcher Cory Newton to end the ballgame.

Tash's complete game was the first of his Division-I career and it came against the nation's #3 hitting team in front of a record crowd of 739 at Parkway Crossing Stadium.

"He kept the ball down and threw some good pitches to their guys in the middle of their order," said Utah Valley coach Steve Garder. "Kyle stepped up and did a great job."

Nick Connor and Kory Drew both came up big for the Wolverines. Connor was 4-4 on the evening with an RBI and two runs scored, while Drew was 2-4 with a huge two RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.

"We had a lot more intensity today," said Gardner. "That's something that the guys need to learn that when they play harder we can win."

The Wolverines scored two runs in the first inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead and Tash let his defense do the job behind him as Utah Valley recorded four double plays on the day.

The win was the first ever for Utah Valley State against in-state rival BYU as the Cougars had won the previous three meeting between the two.

Utah Valley State has a quick turnaround again as they are scheduled to take on Utah, weather permitting, at 2:00pm at Ute Field in Salt Lake City.
