Wolverines Earn Split Against Jacks

OREM, Utah - After dropping the first game of a four game set against South Dakota State, the Utah Valley State baseball team bounced back to even up the series with a 12-5 win. An impressive fireworks display followed the game, but the fireworks in the sixth and seventh innings, when the Wolverines pushed eight runs across the plate, served as a bit of foreshadowing for the after-party.

In the sixth with Utah Valley up 4-0, Canyon Vance, Trent Perry and Eli Slesk all drove home runs to break the game open and give the Wolverines an 8-0 lead.

After the Jackrabbits plated four runs of their own in the top of the 7th, the Wolverines answered with four more in the bottom of the 7th with all of the runs scoring with two outs in the inning.

Jed Jensen threw 7 2/3 for Utah Valley, allowing two earned runs on nine hits while striking out six. Vance had three hits to lead the Wolverines and scored four times, while Perry was 2-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Slesk also had two hits on the day and drove in two as he is now the team leader in batting with a .376 average.

Four SDSU errors were costly as seven of the 12 runs scored by the Wolverines were unearned.

In the series opener, Francisco Torres pitched a four-hitter to lead South Dakota State to a 7-1 win over Utah Valley State. Greg Geary had two home runs in the game for the Jacks and Pat Farrell was 3-for-3 as SDSU led 5-0 after three innings.

Slesk had two of the four hits for the Wolverines while Brad Hales delivered the only run of the game in the sixth inning with an RBI single.

The Wolverines are now 13-30 on the season, while the Jackrabbits move to 11-26. The two teams will play a doubleheader again tomorrow beginning at 1:00pm MST. Both games can be heard live on wolverinesports.net.
