Utes Get by Wolverines in Extra Innings

OREM, Utah - They say two-out hits can win you ball games and Tuesday night in Orem the University of Utah proved just that as Utah rightfielder Joe Mozeleski delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the 10th inning to push the Utes past Utah Valley State 7-6. Mozeleski erased what had been an 0-for-4 day and handed the Wolverines their second straight loss in Utah Valley's 1st extra inning game of 2005.

The Utes put the first two batters on in the 10th on consecutive singles, but Jed Jensen got Clayne Garrett to ground into a double play before Mozeleski delivered the game winning hit.

In the bottom of the 10th, a one out single by Cory Newton put the tying run on but any hopes of tying the game ended with a strike out and a ground out.

Jed Jensen threw well for the Wolverines, lasting four innings and striking out five, but he took the loss after giving up three hits and the run in the 10th. Brian Lane got the win for Utah as he threw the final three innings and allowed just three hits.

Utah Valley State got out of the gate quickly when Trent Perry blasted a full-count pitch over both fences in left field for a grand slam in the first inning. The home run was #13 for the senior as he also picked up his 53rd RBI of the season. The Wolverines put five runs on the board in the first to take a 5-to-1 lead but a three-run third by Utah, including a two-run home run by Ryan Khoury, cut the lead to 5-to-4.

The score was 6-4 after four innings when Kevin Hashimoto singled and promptly stole both second and third and was driven in on a groundout by Nick Connor.

In the seventh inning, Jed Jensen came in with men on 2nd and 3rd and nearly got himself out of a huge jam as he got John Welsh to ground out and struck out Khoury before Jay Brossman delivered a big two-out hit to tie the ballgame.

Hashimoto, Eli Slesk and Cory Newton each had two hits for the Wolverines as they now drop to 14-32 on the year. They will have the rest of the week off as they take finals before beginning the toughest stretch of the year as they take on BYU, Utah, Arizona State and Arizona next week.

They begin with a home game against BYU on Monday night before playing at Utah the following day. The will then travel to Tempe, Arizona for a Wednesday match-up with #20 Arizona State before a three-game weekend series with #9 Arizona.
