GREELEY, Colorado - After losing 4-1 to Northern Colorado and suffering their 7th straight defeat in the opening game of doubleheader on Saturday, something lit a fire in the Utah Valley State hitters as they erupted for 12 runs in the first two innings of a 14-1 win in game two. Three Wolverines combined to hit five home runs, two by Trent Perry and Dan Bulow and one by Kevin Hashimoto. Brady Drake went the distance on the hill as Utah Valley State scored 12 runs in the first two frames, equaling the team's total output for the last six games.
"It shows you that the frame of mind of the player as far as attitude and confidence makes a big difference," said Coach Steve Gardner. "Hitting is contagious with us and we're capable of doing what we're doing but we're also capable not doing anything."
Perry hit his first home run in the top of the first and got the Wolverines on board with two outs. He was followed by an Eli Slesk single and then a two-run blast by Bulow.
"Trent Perry picked us up with that two out-two run home run,"Â said Gardner. "And sometimes that's all it takes. Hopefully when we play tomorrow we can keep that same approach."
"I wanted to make up for the last game I had,"Â said Perry. "I wasn't planning on hitting one out, I just wanted to get a base hit so we could score somebody."
In the second inning Kevin Hashimoto hit a two run homer to give Utah Valley a 6-0 lead, Perry followed three hitters later for a three-run shot and two batters after that Bulow hit a two-run bomb for his Division-I Independent leading 10th home run of 2005.
Perry's two home runs give him nine on the season, and his five RBI day gives him a team high 40 as he continues to add to the single season and all-time school record.
Drake evened up his record at 3-3 while throwing the seven inning complete game, striking out five and allowing no earned runs. It was his second complete game of the season, and like his previous complete game at Washington State he received 14 runs of support, making his life a little easier on the hill.
"You still have to pitch your own game,"Â said Drake. "But it is easier because you know that if a run scores it's not going to hurt you too bad."
Slesk had three hits for the Wolverines, while Kory Drew and Canyon Vance also added two hits apiece.
In the first game, Jason Sands and Bobby Perry combined to allow just five Utah Valley State hits as Northern Colorado used a two-run triple by Brad Baker in the 2nd that was more than enough. The single run by the Wolverines was the third consecutive game that Kam Mickolio has started and received just one run of support.
Eli Slesk hit his first home run of the season to give the Wolverines an early 2nd inning lead that was quickly erased by Baker-??s triple.
The two teams play the rubber match of the series tomorrow at Noon, with Jed Jensen scheduled to go for Utah Valley State. The game can be heard live on wolverinesports.net.
