Struggles Continue for Wolverines at Invitational

GREELEY, Colorado - For the second day in a row, Utah Valley State struggled and lost at the Division-I Independent Invitational and can now finish no higher than 3rd in the four-team tournament. On Saturday it was host Northern Colorado's bats that did the talking, as they had nine extra base hits including three home runs sailing to an 11-4 victory over the Wolverines.

Utah Valley State scored in the top of the first after Canyon Vance drove home Kory Drew to give the Wolverines an early lead. But Zach Brockman quickly erased that lead when he homered to lead off the bottom of the first. The Bears added three more in the third, including a two-run shot by Brennan Garr, his second homer of the Invitational.

Northern Colorado led 6-to-1 after Brad Baker hit his first home run of the year followed by a Grady Gorman double and a Phil Delich RBI single.

The Wolverines threatened in the top of the sixth when Canyon Vance singled, Trent Perry doubled and then Eli Slesk brought them both home with a two-RBI single. But that was as close as Utah Valley State would come four in the bottom of the seventh to stretch the lead to 10-to-3.

Both teams added a single run in the eighth inning for the final 11-4 score.

Vance and Slesk had two hits apiece for Utah Vallley State, who could only muster seven hits on the day. The Bears racked up 17 hits including three each by Matt Sutton, Jared Chacon and Brad Baker, who tied the Northern Colorado triples record when tripled in the seventh inning.

The Bears had the three home runs to go along with five doubles and a triple for their nine extra base hits.

Jed Jensen finished up a memorable career at Utah Valley State that will include a big win at #17 Arizona State on May 4th. Jensen, along with Kevin Hashimoto are the first two four-year senior in Utah Valley State's short NCAA Division-I history. He will go down in the record books at Utah Valley State as the school's all-time NCAA leader in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched to name a few.

Tomorrow Utah Valley State will try to finish of the season on a good note as they take on South Dakota State at 11:00am MST. The Wolverines and Jackrabbits played earlier in the year in Orem, splitting a four-game series. The Jacks beat the New York Institute of Technology in Saturday's early game 4-to-3 in 10 innings.
