Wolverines Upset #17 Sun Devils for Biggest Win in School History

TEMPE, Arizona - It was supposed to be a simple mid-week win for #17 Arizona State over Utah Valley State, but someone forgot to tell Jed Jensen that, and Kevin Hashimoto and Eli Slesk and Canyon Vance and...well, you get the picture. The little engine that could went in to Tempe, Arizona on Wednesday night and knocked off the tradition-rich Sun Devils 9-6 in front of 2,081 fans.

The win is the first ever for Utah Valley State over a ranked opponent in the school's two-year NCAA Division-I history.

"It's awesome. It's gotta be the biggest win ever for this program," said Jensen, who had trouble putting into words what the win means personally and for the program. "Most of our guys grew up dreaming of playing here. To be able to come in here and do this...it's just awesome."

Jensen earned the victory on the mound as he allowed four runs on 10 scattered hits in eight-plus innings of work. He kept the Sun Devil hitters off balance all evening long, striking out nine including each of ASU's top five hitters in their order at least once.

"Jed had a great game," said Coach Steve Gardner. "His changeup was outstanding. This is the biggest win we've ever had."

Jensen was locked in a pitcher's duel with Arizona State starter Brett Bordes through the first four innings when Utah Valley State put four runs on the board. Cory Newton picked up the first RBI of the day on a single to right and Kevin Hashimoto quickly followed that up with an RBI single of his own. Kory Drew then brought them both home with a two-run double to give the Wolverines a 4-0 lead.

The Sun Devils got a run back in the bottom of the inning, but Utah Valley answered when Brad Hales doubled home Eli Slesk, who led off the inning with a double of his own.

ASU scored again in the bottom of the seventh to cut it to 5-2, but in the top of the 8th the Wolverines had another four run inning to take a seven run lead.

Cory Newton and Hashimoto had an RBI's in the inning and Canyon Vance delivered a two-RBI single up the middle to finish the scoring for the Wolverines.

Arizona State refused to go away though as they put two runs on the board in the eighth and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Eli Slesk made the defensive play of the day on a blooper by Tuffy Gosewisch when he went into centerfield and robbed the Sun Devil catcher of a hit that ended the game.

Several individual performances highlighted the win for the Wolverines, including Hashimoto's two-hit, two-RBI day. Slesk had two hits in what seems like his regular output as he continues to lead the team in hitting at .393, Vance had two hits and two runs batted in and Beau Giles came in in the 8th inning and got a big double-play ball to halt any chance of a big rally by ASU.

"This is an opportunity that Utah Valley's never had," said Hashimoto. "It's awesome, I couldn't have asked for anything better."

It doesn't get any easier for the Wolverines as they now prepare for a three-game series at #8 Arizona beginning Friday night at 8:00pm MST. The two team will also play at 8:00pm MST on Saturday night with the series finale coming Sunday at 1:00pm MST.
