Fresno State Shuts Out Wolverines

February 18, 2006

FRESNO, California - Fresno State got a strong pitching performance from south paw Eddie Romero to top Utah Valley State 8-0 and win its 2nd straight of a three-game series. Romero struck out seven and allowed just four hits as he worked the first eight innings before giving way to Jason Breckely in the 9th.

"(Romero) pretty much dominated us," said Utah Valley coach Steve Gardner. "He was pretty effective and it was our first chance to see a left hander this year and that wasn't a good combination. And every time we seemed to make decent contact it was hit right at them."

Like Friday night's game, Fresno (6-5) used a big inning to break the game open as they pushed across four runs in the 2nd inning. After Christian Vitters led off the inning with his 4th home run of the season, a hit by pitch and three straight singles led to three more runs off of UV starter Kalen Parsons.

Romero kept control of the Wolverines (1-5) all afternoon, allowing only one runner to reach third base the entire ballgame when Canyon Vance was stranded there in the 4th inning.

Fresno State added one run in the 4th and 7th innings and two in the 8th for the final difference.

Utah Valley State was led by two hits from Dan Bulow while both Eli Slesk and Brad Hales each had one hit to extend their season long hitting streaks to six games. Slesk ended 2005 with four-game hit streak, stretching his overall streak to 10 games.

Chris Benson and Canyon Vance were the only other Wolverines to pick up a hit on the day.

Romero's performance was the longest of his career at Fresno State as he moved to 2-1 with the victory. Parsons took the loss and is now 0-1.

Utah Valley will try to salvage the series finale tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 2:05pm MST. The Wolverines will call on Kyle Tash (1-0, 2.57) who pitched earned the team's only win over Southern Utah. Fresno State will counter with Andy Underwood (2-0, 1.57), who threw eight innings in a 5-0 shutout of UCLA in his last start. Live stats can be found by going to www.GoBulldogs.com.
