ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico - Utah Valley State dropped its third straight game as New Mexico completed a three-game sweep with a 9-6 win in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
After the Lobos (8-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, the Wolverines (2-8) answered with four runs on four hits in the second to take the lead.
Eli Slesk and
Canyon Vance both had RBI singles in the inning while
Keiki Albino delivered a sac fly RBI.
New Mexico's Chris Carlson tied the score in the third inning with a two-run blast to left field for his team-leading fifth home run of the season.
The Lobos added a run in the fourth and then two more in the sixth, including a solo home run off of the bat of DH Daniel Stovall, to take a 7-4 lead.
The Wolverines chipped into the lead by adding a single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but both runs were answered by the Lobos in the bottom of each inning, not allowing Utah Valley State to make a serious threat at New Mexico's lead.
UV starter
Kyle Tash (2-1, 4.71) was sent to his first loss of the season while Lobo freshman Chace Lankford (2-1, 4.82) earned the win in his first collegiate start on the mound. Damon Miller pitched the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Slesk, Vance and
Adam Openshaw each collected two hits for the Wolverines on the day, while Albino drove in two runs. Carlson had three RBI for New Mexico, which also got three hits and three runs scored from Matt Foote.
Utah Valley State is scheduled to host Air Force in its home opener on Friday at 4:00pm MST. The two will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at Noon.
