Air Force Sweeps Doubleheader to Open Series

March 3, 2006

OREM, Utah - Air Force used two big third innings to complete a doubleheader sweep of Utah Valley State Friday in Orem, 10-8 & 11-4. The Falcons scored five runs in the third inning of the first game and had a six-run third in the night cap. Both innings erased early deficits and gave the Falcons the lead for good.

Air Force designated hitter Josh Meents dealt the big blow in the first game, with a two-out grand slam to centerfield to give the Falcons a 5-2 lead.

Trailing 10-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Wolverines scored three runs to get back in the game, but Falcon closer Paul Vignola struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 4th save.

Five errors and eight walks given up in the first game hampered Utah Valley State.

Kyle DePierre (2-2), who came on the fifth inning for Air Force got the win while Kam Mickolio (0-4) took the loss.

Eli Slesk had a nice game at the plate for the Wolverines, going 3-for-5 with four RBI.

In the second game the Falcons hit three home runs in the third to erase a 3-0 deficit and take a 6-3 lead and never looked back. They built the lead to as much as 11-3 in the top of the sixth before UV added a run in the bottom of the sixth for the final tally.

Kalen Parsons (0-3) took the loss for the Wolverines in the second game while Tooele native Paul Pratt earned his first win of the season in relief.

The Wolverines have now lost five in a row and drop to 2-10 on the season while Air Force ended a five game losing streak in the first game and are now 7-6.

The two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow at 1:00pm.
