DAVIS, California - Kam Mickolio's stellar performance on the mound led Utah Valley State to a series opening win Friday over UC Davis, 4-2 on a cold Northern California afternoon. The win was Utah Valley State's (4-10) first win in the first game of a series this season.
Mickolio (1-4) threw eight innings and allowed two runs on eight hits in earning his first win while
Marcus Moore came out of the bullpen to pitch the ninth for his first save.
"He did a great job. He got a lot of ground balls and that's what he's got to do," said head coach Steve Gardner. "He took command and worked ahead to a lot of hitters."
"I felt a lot more comfortable than I have and was able to throw a lot of strikes," said Mickolio. "I didn't try to do too much and just control what I could control."
After UC Davis (8-9) scored first in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead the Wolverines answered with a run in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.
Tied at one in the fourth,
Eli Slesk and
Nick Connor hit back-to-back singles before
Adam Openshaw sacrificed but reached on an error by the pitcher Bryan Evans to load the bases.
Dan Bulow gave the Wolverines a 3-1 lead when he hit a two-run single for his 11th and 12th runs batted in of the season.
Utah Valley added one more run in the inning when Bulow stole second and the ball skipped away on the throw by the catcher, allowing Openshaw to score.
Davis scored a run in the sixth on an RBI single from Tyler LaTorre but that's all they could muster. The Aggies did threaten in the ninth but Moore struck out pinch hitter Kevin James to end the game with two runners aboard.
The win was the second for Utah Valley State while Davis had now dropped four in a row.
The two teams will meet tomorrow at 2:00pm MST. The game can be heard live on www.WolverineGreen.com.
