San Francisco Edges Wolverines in Pitcher's Duel

March 21, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO, California - A great outing from starting pitcher Brett Guerrero went for naught on Tuesday as San Francisco edged Utah Valley State 2-0, in a pitcher's duel that lasted just over two hours.

Guerrero, making his first career start, lasted 7 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three USF batters despite taking the loss in the first ever meeting between the two schools.

San Francisco (12-12) got a two-out RBI double in the fourth inning from Daniel Morales and a seventh inning home run to left center by Mitchell Bialosky in the seventh to put its two runs on the board.

Patrick McGuigan (5-1) pitched seven innings and allowed just three hits while striking out five for USF to earn the win while Jeff Gordon pitched the final two innings to earn his second save and preserve the shutout.

Utah Valley State threatened in the fifth inning when Brad Hales singled up the middle but Dan Bulow, running from second, was thrown out at the plate by Lucas DeLong to end the inning.

The two teams will meet again on Wednesday at 2:00pm PST with the Wolverines scheduled to send Ryan Jessop to the mound while the Dons will counter with Brian Anderson.
