SAN FRANCISCO, California - Utah Valley State's
Adam Openshaw had a home run and four RBI on the day but it was a two-run blast by San Francisco's Zach Kim in the eighth inning that was the difference as the Wolverines fell 7-6 Wednesday afternoon in the Bay Area.
The loss was the third straight for Utah Valley (6-15) and gave San Francisco (13-12) a two-game series sweep.
After falling behind 4-0 after just two innings of play, Utah Valley State fought back to tie it at four in the top of the third after an RBI double from
Eli Slesk and a three-run home run by Openshaw, his second homer of the season.
San Francisco added a run in the bottom of the third to regain the lead at 5-4 after Kim stole second and came all the way around to score after two errors by Utah Valley State.
Kade Boyer led off the top of the fifth with an infield single and stole second before he was driven to third on a single to left by
Eli Slesk.
That set the table for Openshaw, who picked up his fourth RBI when he drove Boyer home with a single to right.
Dan Bulow delivered the go ahead RBI giving UV a 6-5 lead on a sacrifice fly to leftfield to score Slesk.
Utah Valley State 's bullpen retired 12 straight Dons at one point by a combination of
Kyle Beecher,
Dan Christensen,
Kyle Tash and
Turreal Moore.
In the bottom of the eighth
Kalen Parsons surrendered a lead-off walk to Chris Bacigalupi who was lifted for pinch-runner George Lujan. Following a groundout that moved Lujan to second, Kim delivered the winning home run.
Parsons (0-5) took the loss while Chris Quine (2-1) worked three innings out of the pen for San Francisco to earn the win.
Up next for the Wolverines is a three-game series with #16 Oregon State in Corvallis Friday through Sunday. Friday's game begins at 5:00pm PST while first pitch for Saturday and Sunday is 1:00pm PST.
