CORVALLIS, Oregon - In a theme that echoed the first two games of the series, Utah Valley State fell behind early but fought to make a game of it before coming up short as #16 Oregon State completed a three-game sweep of the Wolverines with a 13-6 win on Sunday.
In a three hour and 48 minute marathon that was also delayed 35 minutes by rain, the Beavers scored three runs in the bottom of the first to jump out on top early and never trailed.
Dan Bulow got the Wolverines on the board in the fourth with his third home run of the season but OSU answered with three in the fourth and one more in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead.
Utah Valley State continued its pesky play though as
Eli Slesk hit his first home run of the season in the sixth and a four-run seventh got UV within a run at 7-6.
In the four-run inning, Slesk doubled home
Brad Hales and then scored when
Dan Bulow hit a two-run double to right off of Eddie Kunz.
Canyon Vance followed with an RBI single but that's as close as Utah Valley could get.
Oregon State added two runs in the bottom of the seventh before turning to All-American closer Kevin Gunderson in the top of eighth.
OSU got four more insurance runs in the eighth and Gunderson finished it off in the ninth for his second save of the series and sixth overall.
Oregon State starter Anton Maxwell (2-2) got the win while
Kyle Tash (4-2) took the loss on the mound.
Bulow was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day with three RBI while Slesk and
Kade Boyer had two hits apiece.
For the Beavers, Scott Santschi was a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI as OSU pounded out 15 hits as a team.
Utah Valley State returns home Tuesday to take on Northwest Nazarene in a doubleheader beginning at Noon. In state rival Southern Utah comes to Orem during the weekend for a four-game series that begins Thursday at 7:00pm.
