Wolverines Top Northern Colorado in Slugfest

April 14, 2006

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley State scored 15 runs on 17 hits in taking the opener of a three-game series against fellow D-I Independent Northern Colorado, 15-10. After failing to score in the first inning, the Wolverines scored in each of their final seven at bats.

Utah Valley got three hits each from Canyon Vance and Dan Bulow, while Cory Newton was 2-for-3 with four runs batted in. Vance got the Wolverines on the board in the second with his third home run of the season.

Northern Colorado took an early 4-1 lead after two runs each in the second and third innings, but UV dented it with a single run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Eli Slesk.

The Wolverines jumped out in front in the fourth when they pushed five runs acrossed on the strength of back-to-back doubles by Newton and Kade Boyer, giving UV a 7-4 lead.

Adam Symons got UNC back within a run in the fifth with a two-run home run to right field, but that was answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Chris Benson scored on a wild pitch and Newton had his second consecutive two-run hit on a single through the right side.

The Bears would not go away though as they came back to tie the game at 10 in the top of the sixth, with the tying run scoring on a two-out, two-run single from Seth Tartler.

Vance gave Utah Valley State the lead for good in the sixth when he doubled home Slesk. Vance then scored on an RBI single by Bulow.

Nick Connor's double in the seventh made it 14-10 before a solo home run by Adam Openshaw in the eighth put the nail in the coffin and made it 15-10.

Brett Guerrero (1-3) earned the win after throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Tyler Pearson (2-1) suffered the loss for Northern Colorado after giving up five earned runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.

Every starter in Utah Valley's order had at least one hit on the night while Symons was a perfect 3-for-3 for the Bears.

The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1pm. Kalen Parsons and Dan Christensen are the scheduled starters for the Wolverines while UNC is expected to counter with Seth Gilleland and Roy Allen.
