PROVO, Utah - Ben Saylor homered in his first two at-bats and BYU took advantage of five Utah Valley State errors as the Cougars topped the Wolverines 11-6 in front of 1,416 fans at Larry H. Miller Park on Tuesday night.
Saylor, who began his college career at Utah Valley, finished the day 3-for-5 with six runs batted in after a two-run home run in the first, a three-run blast in the second and an RBI single in the seventh in helping his current team past his former one for the second time in a week.
His home run in the second inning came after an error prolonged the inning and gave the Cougars an early 6-1 lead.
Dan Bulow dented the lead in the top of the fourth when he hit his seventh home run of the year.
The bottom of the fourth brought more trouble defensively though for Utah Valley State (12-27) as two errors in the inning helped BYU (16-20) to four more runs and gave the Cougars an 10-2 lead.
Bulow was a perfect 3-for-3 for Utah Valley and was a triple short of the cycle.
Utah Valley State scored two runs each in the eighth and ninth innings to make a dent in the final outcome.
The Wolverines actually out-hit BYU 13-11 in the ballgame but their struggles defensively led to eight unearned runs for the Cougars on the night.
With the win, BYU takes a 2-0 advantage in the season series and a 7-1 advantage all-time.
The two teams will meet May 2 nd in what will be senior night for Utah Valley State and then on May 16 th in the Wolverines' final game before the D-I Independent Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Jordan Muir (4-0) earned the win after allowing one earned run through three innings in a pre-designated role while Ryan Jessop (0-3) suffered the loss for UV after surrendering 10 runs (only two earned) on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Up next for the Wolverines will be a three-game series in Reno at Nevada beginning Friday night at 7pm MST.
