Wolverines Drop Finale at Nevada

April 23, 2006

RENO, Nevada - Utah Valley State could only muster one run on six hits in a 5-1 loss at Nevada in Sunday's series finale, giving the Wolfpack a 2-1 series win.

The Wolverines had 26 hits in the first two games but were stymied by Nevada starter Ryan Rodriguez (5-5), who threw seven innings and allowed just one run on four hits.

Nevada took the lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Baker Krukow, scoring Brian Joynt and giving the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead.

With one out in the fourth, Wolverine senior Canyon Vance singled with one out and advanced to second after a groundout by Dan Bulow

Adam Openshaw then delivered a two-out RBI double to score Vance and knot the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Nevada had the bases loaded with two outs when Matt Suleski delivered an infield single that gave the Wolfpack a 2-1 lead they would never relinquish.

The Wolverines had a shot to tie it in the top of the seventh after Dan Bulow doubled to lead off the inning, but following a strike out of Openshaw, Bulow was caught trying to advance to third on a ground ball by Cory Newton. Keiki Albino then struck out to end the inning and the Wolverines hopes of taking the series.
