OREM, Utah - Lewis-Clark State (38-4) scored seven runs early to take a big lead and held off a late Utah Valley State rally to win 13-9 Saturday afternoon. The win for the Warriors gives them both the series win and avenges Friday night's 7-5 UV win that ended Lewis-Clark's 26-game winning streak.
The Wolverines rallied with a five-run eighth fueled by a two-run single from
Vic Hillman, but it was too little too late against the #1 ranked team in NAIA.
Early on, with Utah Valley (14-32) already trailing 4-0 in the 2nd, LCSC third baseman Allen Balmer hit a three-run home run to put the Warriors up 7-0. The long ball was the second of the series and fifth of the season for Balmer.
Juan Verdejo then hit a solo home run, his first of the year, in the fifth to give Lewis-Clark 8-0 lead.
Utah Valley State came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning capped by an RBI single by
Chris Benson, but a grand slam by Justin Fuller in the top of the sixth put LCSC up 12-2.
The Wolverines got two more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by
Dan Bulow and an RBI groundout from
Brad Hales, cutting the lead to 12-4.
Nick Currin gave Lewis-Clark a 13-4 lead with a solo shot in the eighth before the five-run inning made the final outcome look closer on the scoreboard.
In the eighth,
Justin Williams led off with the first hit of his Wolverine career, a towering double to the wall in center.
Then with two out in the inning,
Keiki Albino blooped a ball into centerfield and ended up with a double after the ball took a weird hop in center. The double drove in Williams and put men and second and third.
Hillman then delivered his two-run single to left, his first hit and runs batted in of his career, trimming the deficit to six runs.
Eli Slesk knocked in Hillman with a triple to left and scored on an RBI single by
Adam Openshaw to cap the scoring.
Jason Garcia (6-0) earned the win after coming on in relief for injured starter Mike Miller, while
Ryan Jessop (0-5) lasted only two innings for the Wolverines in the loss.
Fuller was 2-for-4 with five RBI for Lewis-Clark while Connor, Slesk, Benson and Vance all had two hits each for Utah Valley State.
The Wolverines will play their final home game of the 2006 season on Tuesday night at 7pm when in-state rival BYU comes to Orem. It will be Senior Night and the final home game for 10 Utah Valley State seniors.
