Bulow's Blast Not Enough as Wolverines Victim to Sweep

Feb. 18, 2007

Moraga, California - Dan Bulow's two-run home run in the fourth inning gave Utah Valley State a 2-0 lead, but St. Mary's scored three unanswered runs to complete a three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon in Northern California.

The loss sends the Wolverines to their fifth consecutive loss to open the season heading into a three-game series at in-state rival Southern Utah next weekend.

After Eli Slesk opened the top of the fourth with a single, Bulow hit his first, and UV's first, home run of the 2007 season to left.

Freshman Jace Brinkerhoff, making the first start of his career, held the Gaels without a run through four innings but suffered the loss after SMC scored a single run in the fifth and two more in the fifth.

Brinkerhoff finished with 5.1 innings pitched and three runs on nine hits while striking out six.

Ian Gordon tied the game in the fifth with an RBI double and then came around to score what ended up as the game-winning run on a double from J.P. Musgrove.

Matt Ratliff then came on in relief of Brinkerhoff and allowed just one hit over the final 2.2 innings of work.

Alex Jensen (1-1) earned the win for St. Mary's after throwing four scoreless innings out of the bullpen and allowing just three hits and striking out five.

Slesk went 3-for-4 on the day and finished the series 6-for-11.
