Las Cruces, New Mexico - Utah Valley freshman Dick Bargewell connected on his first collegiate home run but New Mexico State won Sunday's series finale, 7-5, to take two out of three from the Wolverines.
New Mexico State (9-11) got out of the gate early when Tyler Hardt hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. The blast was Hardt's second of the series and third of the season.
The Wolverines (5-10) were scoreless until the third inning when Bargewell walked to lead off the inning and later scored on Keiki Albino's single to left.
Marcus Quade answered that run with a solo blast over the centerfield wall to push the lead back to three at 4-1.
Bargewell's two-run blast started a three-run fifth and helped Utah Valley tie the game at four, but the Aggies scored three runs, all unearned, in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead.
Albino drove in his third run of the day in the ninth inning with a single that scored Bargewell, the third time that freshman from Burlington, Washington crossed home plate in the game.
Jace Brinkerhoff (1-3) threw five innings for Utah Valley and allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits in suffering the loss.
Brian Gausman (4-1) earned the win after coming on in relief for the Aggies. Gausman was credited for both wins in the series for NMSU.
Bargewell and Albino had two hits each for UV and combined to drive in all five runs.
