Nevada Earns Sweep With Extra Inning Win

March 18, 2007

Reno, Nevada - For the second straight day a David Ciarlo single did the Utah Valley baseball team in, this time in the 10th inning of a 4-3 Nevada win, giving the Wolfpack a series sweep over the Wolverines.

Ciarlo, who drove in the winning run in the seventh inning of Saturday's game, singled to left to score pinch-runner Jason Sadoian to give Nevada the walk-off win.

The loss is the fifth straight for Utah Valley, who drops to 5-14 while Nevada jumped to 13-12.

Nevada took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single from Matt Suleski and added two more runs in the third to go up 3-0.

In the fourth, Jace Brinkerhoff and Derrick Thomas led off with back-to-back singles and after Eli Slesk walked, the Wolverines had the bases loaded and nobody out.

Brinkerhoff scored on a wild pitch from Nevada starter Kyle Howe to get UV on the board and Thomas followed him in on an RBI groundout by Austin Heaps. Dan Bulow tied the game when he drove Slesk home with a sacrifice fly to centerfield for his team high 18th run batted in.

Utah Valley starter Bryan Smith settled down after the third, shutting the Wolfpack out over the next 4.1 innings. Smith worked out of minor jams in three of those innings before giving way to Marcus Moore with two aboard and one out in the eighth.

Moore came in and immediately got Chris Siewart to ground into a double play, preserving the 3-3 tie.

In the 10th, Utah Valley got a one-out single from Thomas but the senior catcher was stranded at first, allowing Ciarlo to be the hero for the second day in a row.

Baker Krukow led off the 10th with a pinch-hit single and was lifted for Sadoian. After Sadoian was sacrificed over to second the Wolverines opted to intentionally walked Matt Suleski before Ciarlo delivered the game-winner.

Croshaw and Thomas both had three hits for the Wolverines, who finished with eight hits on the afternoon. Nevada had 13 hits as a team, led by three from Shaun Kort.

Up next for UV is a three-game series in Spokane, Washington at Gonzaga on March 24-26.
