Orem, Utah - UV's bats exploded in the seven-inning first game of a doubleheader as the Wolverines smoked 20 hits while posting a .571 team batting average in a 15-6 victory over Southern Utah.
The Wolverines (12-20) recorded 11 doubles and ripped four home runs in the win. The Thunderbirds fell to 4-29 with the loss.
UV was led by Scott Croshaw's three hits and four RBI. Eli Slesk also had three hits and four RBI while Adam Openshaw went 4-for-4. All three also homered for the Wolverines.
Leading 2-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, UV scored 13 runs over the next three innings including five in the fourth, six in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Slesk's three-run home run highlighted the fourth frame while Croshaw added a pair of RBI with a two-run double with bases loaded. Openshaw's two-run homer plated the first two runs of the fifth before the Wolverines recorded four consecutive doubles to push their lead to 13-2.
After SUU scored four runs in the top of the sixth, UV responded with a pair of runs on a Croshaw two-run homer.
After the Thunderbirds led the seventh off with a single, the Wolverines turned a double play before a fly out ended the game.
After game two of the doubleheader, the two teams will face off in the series finale tomorrow evening.
