Mitchell, South Dakota - South Dakota State jumped out to an early four run lead and never looked back to win the series opener over Utah Valley 10-2 on Friday.
The Wolverines had a chance score first in the top of the first when leadoff hitter Tyler Garretson singled and stole second. But that chance was squandered when the next three batters failed to advance Garretson past second base.
In the bottom of the inning, the Jacks got a bases loaded single from Nick Adams to put the first two runs of the game on the board. Two batters later, Cal Lewis singled to drive in two more runs and push the lead to 4-0.
SDSU eventually pushed the lead to 8-0 before the Wolverines were finally able to get on the board when Austin Heaps doubled home Ryan Jones in the sixth inning. Heaps then came around to score when Josh Hinckley followed him with another double.
The Jacks added single run in the sixth on another Lewis single before the SDSU senior capped his impressive day with a solo home run in the eighth. On the day Lewis finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored.
Utah Valley's offense all came from four players; Garretson, Heaps, Hinckley and Scott Croshaw, who all had two hits each.
Jacks' starter Matt Bowman lasted seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits to improve to 4-2 on the season including a perfect 2-0 against the Wolverines this season.
Utah Valley had five errors on the day and fell to 3-14 when committing two or more errors in game.
South Dakota State has now won three out of four this season against Utah Valley and leads the all-time series 6-4. The series will continue tomorrow with an 11am MT start.
